Registration notes: The Scottish Tartans Society archives apparently suggested that this was a 'simplified manufacturers version', but in his 1985 book (Campbell Tartan) Alastair Campbell of Airds cites a painting, c.1770, of a Medical Officer of the 42nd Regiment wearing this sett. James Mackinlay a tartan collector between the wars, 1930 -1950. His collection is found in the Scottish Tartans Society archive.
